It was my 4th time to meet the orphans at Kampot Orphanage when I visited the children in February 2007.
The boys and girls from 5 to 18 years received me with great pleasure because they knew good times where ahead, when lok o pok as they call me does painting and other kinds of arts with them.
The children, who have sponsor parents from Germany or Australia, are also taken care of with presents they get from their sponsors.
This is the happy part of Somnang Foundation that was established in 2004 after I had been teaching at the orphanage for 3 months. Later me wife came to see me and we discovered that the orphanage was in great need to be supported. The hygienic standards and the meals cooked were very poor and there was always money needed for school uniforms, books and teaching material as well as for clothing.
That’s why we got the foundation moving with German friends in Kampot and former colleagues at home. Very soon we were joined by our Australian partners Lyn and David Brown from Port Macquarie.
To improve the situation of the children we need your support through donations of any amount - small or big.
What do we spent your hard earned money for?
purchase of rice for a whole year
raising the health standards
clothing for the children
school fees and books
private English and PC lessons at the orphanage
support for studies and vocational training, when the children leave the orphanage
maintenance of the buildings
What have we achieved so far:
Sufficient supply of food
Tanks for rain water (30.000 litres) and public water supply
(5.000 litres)
New showers and toilets
Shower and toilet attached to sick room
New dinning hall
This year the situation for the children became worse, instead of 34 to 36 the home was built for the director EM Sovanny had to put up 56, who lost their parents in most cases because the parents died of HIV.
In a society like the Cambodian this means the worst for the children. They cannot go to school, are robbed of their belongings or the hut and fields owned by their parents. Those are lucky when they find shelter in the Kampot orphanage and get a chance in life.
